'Stralia Day
January 26th is Australia Day! Unfortunately, it fell on a Tuesday this year so we didn't have the long weekend but I think about 50% of the population chucked a sickie on Monday anyway. We kicked off the weekend on Thursday night with dinner in Manly for Dan's birthday and then once again on Friday after work with a few drinks but we tried to take it easy as Saturday was our friend Brian's birthday. We celebrated with a BBQ on the beach starting at 2pm and it was a scorcher of a day! The sea was nice and cool, the food delicious, and the company great. It had been a long time since we caught up with the US secondee group from work. And we ended the day with drinks and dinner at the wharf bar.
Unfortunately, the weather didn't hold up for Sunday. It was the perfect opportunity to head inside at the Australian Museum to check out the Wildlife Photographer of the Year awards. They come every year and we thoroughly enjoy them. This time we took our friends and fellow photog and nature lovers, Graham and Sarah. We were done by lunch time and then had time to finally stop and see our Manly friends Sam and Lisa and new baby Amoree.
Monday was back to work but we left on time for a happy hour for yet somemore birthday celebrations. This time is was Phillipa and Richard (a UK secondee couple at work who happen to have the same birthday!).
Tuesday was the biggest birthday of all...Australia's!. There were tons of things going on but after we joined Phillipa and Richard at brunch for a recap of the last nights events we chose to stay in our favorite place, Manly. We spent the day at Sam & Lisa's for a true Aussie BBQ and celebration complete with lemingtons and vegimite sandwiches (ugh). There was plenty to eat and drink. It was a scorcher of a day once again and we managed to hang in there for awhile before breaking into Dan and Chez' pool for a swim.
Now it is only a three day work week before next weekend!
