Perth & The Margaret River

The last leg of our western Australia road trip was a few days in the growing metropolis of Perth and south to the Margaret River…

Perth

Perth is a growing city and has been catching on in popularity and we can easily see why…a clean city, beautiful beaches, historic freemantle, and rottnest island. We spent the first day in the Swan River wine region stopping at the original Houghton wines in the morning and then heading for the Perth beaches in the afternoon. We had lunch at Peters by the Sea, a great burger joint at Scarborough beach and then went for Cottesloe hoping to get a little sun for a picture. Unfortunately the sun wasn’t coming out all weekend so we spent the rest of it in Freemantle. We didn’t even get a trip into rottnest island which from the photos looks breathtaking…not to mention it is the only place where the Quokkas live (miniature kangaroos, it almost looks like a cross between a roo and a rabbit).

In Freemantle we stayed for a few days at a cute little boutique bed and breakfast and did a little walking around the town’s shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. Katie fell in love and wished we had another week to spend there. After grabbing coffees at a local cafĂ© and beers at the local boutique brewery of Little Creatures, we had a great dinner at the local Indian restaurant. Of course the next day was another round of brekkie, coffees, and dinner at yet more of the cafes with some time in between to take in some of the historic buildings and a prison tour. The prison tour was actually quite interesting. It was originally a settlement for the convicts and later became a prison. The tour included some fascinating and mind boggling stories of the prison, its prisoners, and of course some escapes.

Margaret River

The last stop was Margaret River…Katie’s pick and a last minute addition to the trip in place of rottnest island where we didn’t mind the rain so much. It was a beautiful three hour drive south of Perth where we stopped at a lighthouse and the world’s longest jetty…something like 22km long. It was so long we could barely fit it in one picture.

The Margaret River is of course famous for its wineries and a foodies delight. We had a great day stopping at the many wineries, breweries, berry farm, chocolate factory and dairy company…all topped off with dinner at one of the best restaurants of our trip.

Margaret River is also famous for its lovely beaches so we also decided to take a drive along the coast to stop and take a look. Despite the cold there were still a few surfers out. Looking back provided a beautiful site of the river slinking its way through the hillside to the beaches. Very different from the first part of our trip in the Outback.
