Old Saigon
Old Saigon is now Ho Chi Minh City after the war and of course there is a lot about the Vietnam War. There is so much about the war that I didnt know and was never taught about in school. But after looking at the haunting photos in the disturbing War Museum I will never forget. It is something everyone should see. I was almost in tears and literally sick to my stomach when I left. No one should go through war let alone those war crimes. I hope we all have learnt a lesson.
The War Museum did a great job with pictures of war crimes, devastation to Vietnam and its people, and war hero stories from all sides. The chemical warfare has had long lasting effects which you still see today on the streets of Vietnam.
We also visited the Cu Chi tunnels, a maze of 250kms of tunnels. While the tunnels featured clear propaganda for Vietnam it is to be expected (they are communist and wont event allow the use of facebook...what am I going to do?!). But I was amazed at how impressive the tunnels were that helped them win the war...very tiny (for tiny people) with a drainage system to the Saigon river, secret doors, oxygen holes, booby traps, etc all in a very dense forest. They also offer the chance to shoot an AK47 while you are there and while I didn't opt for that, it was more than surreal to hear the sound of the gunshots in the background as you are crawling through the tunnels. I would never want to be in war and am thankful for those that do it for me.
Happy Memorial Day to my American friends!!
