Swiss Alps

So far we have been making the most out of every weekend and have headed to the snow.  The mountains are only about an hour or two away from the city and the trains can take you right there.  We have checked out little Flumserberg (the closest but smallest), Flims Laax (a massive ski resort but oh so beautiful and great runs) and then spent a weekend at Riederalp.

Riederalp was by far our favorite.  It affords gorgeous views of the Aletsch glacier and you can see the famous Matterhorn peak on a clear day.  There are no cars in the villages so it is ski in and ski out.  The runs are pretty decent but best of all was the fact that it wasnt a huge tourist hotspot.  It felt like a true Swiss village with cute little Swiss style chalets dotting the hillside and delicious Swiss food (including apfler makkaroni, rosti, and fondue with schnapps) everywhere.  We were even surprised to see the locals gather at our restaurant for some yodelling and sing alongs.  And it was beautiful.

Ski season is over for now and spring has arrived.  So more skiing will have to wait til next winter but we will still be exploring the mountains by foot.
