Madrid
Nearly every weekend is May is a long weekend here in Europe due to the religious holidays that are still designated public holidays...an advantage to living here in Europe. It is especially perfect for after busy season for accountants like me. So I had a trip away planned for almost every weekend.
This weekend - Madrid, one of the major European destination cities.
We did the classic stops...Plaza Mayor, its famous town square, is beautiful if you can see past the hords of tourists and the peddlers trying to make a buck, the Mercato a site of tempting tapas albeit overpriced, and the main streets of bars and restaurants packed full of more tourists and bachelor parties.
But none of that is really for me. Luckily, our reprieve was a little local bar we stumbled upon down a backstreet. We grabbed a table outside, sipped the Spanish wine and devoured the best tapas we had the whole weekend (which were also free with the wine - one more reason to find a local spot). Much more my style.
So if anyone is traveling to Madrid, do your homework and go local. For Madrid, it is the only worthwhile way to go.
