Long Weekend - Valencia, Spain

May is full of public holidays here in Switzerland which means that nearly every weekend is a long weekend. We wanted to get away so we searched around and found flights to Valencia. Not a destination I would have originally thought of but the flight prices couldn't be beat. And who doesn't love Spain - especially the food?

Valencia is home to paella and we tried some traditional Valencia style at La Pepica on the beach, famous for its paella. But we, personally are tapas people. Our hotel recommended a little local bar just off the beach called Casa Montana. The tapas, servers, and wine were SO GOOD that we actually went back on our last night for more. It was exactly what we had been dreaming (and drooling) about ever since we booked the flights to Spain.

Our weekend away wasn't just about the food though. We booked a hotel by beach in hopes of some good weather.  And while May isn't really a good time for swimming, the sunshine didn't disappoint us and we had plenty of time for lounging.  Just being near the water and in the sun made us feel refreshed.

Riley got his first feel of the sand too.

Even though we wanted to spend time at the beach, we also wanted to spend a day in the city and see what it had to offer:

  • Old Town - Valencia has less of a touristy old town and more of a living, working city. But there are still some pretty buildings and squares to see.  First though, we hit the Central Mercado for some fresh squeezed Valencia orange juice. And after lunch near the cathedral it was off to the Horchataria Santa Catalina for some horchata  (a local specialty drink) and churros. (Yes, more food)
  •  Park - Valencia is unique in that it has developed a dry river bed into a wonderful park winding from the city nearly to the beach. It has everything to offer and is a lovely walk.

  • Amazing Architecture - At the end of the park is a huge complex housing state of the art buildings with the aquarium and arts & science building. While we didn't head inside because of the mixed reviews, it was worthwhile to walk around the impressive buildings.
