Long Weekend - Lake Maggiore
The Italian Lakes are one of my favourite destinations. It is one of the prettiest places in the world and it is perfect for a relaxing weekend away. So far we have been to Lake Como, Lake Lugano and now Lake Maggiore, the largest one.
We did a four day weekend, which was also helpful in avoiding traffic on Friday and Sunday afternoons.
While we stayed further down the lake on the Italian side, we stopped in Locarno for coffee and a walk on the Switzerland side. Locarno is an easy train ride for us so we plan to be back here for some hiking later this summer.
We stayed in Stresa which had good accommodation options and a nice little town with some great food and gelato. Unfortunately the clouds decided to come along for the weekend but it was still beautiful even in the gray. As such, we spent our days walking along the lake, visiting several islands and eating gelato. And the evenings were for dinner in town.
The islands are 5 min by ferry and easy to catch even in May:
Isola Superiore - My favourite, just an island with a small town, restaurants and a beach. Perfect for lunch.
Isola Bella - Beautiful views from the terrace but mostly just cheap souvenir shops and one to skip
We also did a day in Cannobio - a pretty little town with great views perfect for a wander and a delicious lunch.
