Tasmania

I have always wanted to go back to Tasmania and summer time is the time to go. It is quite big and we only had four days so this time we were headed to the North.

Launceston is the town you fly into.  There's not much here but we had a day to check it out.  There is a pretty little canyon with some hiking paths and an overdone park but pretty none the less.  We found some good food (eat at Black Cow Bistro) and also took a small drive out of town to the Josef Chromy vineyard for some beautiful views, wine and food.

Tamar Valley is where the wineries are at though and we were headed there for day two.  The wine was gorgeous.  Its the perfect climate for some spectacular cuvee, chardonnay, and pinot noir. You can even get fill up a box as you go and have the last winery ship it home for you.  We definitely stocked up.

My favorites:

  • Holm Oak - Riley loved to feed an apple to the pig and that was our real reason for stopping. But then they opened a 2011 pinot noir for us to taste and we got a few to go.
  • Goaty Hill - an award winning winery with a good selection
  • Delamere - Riley also loved the roosters, large yard, and toy box here too.  I LOVED the cuvee and rose.  I don't normally like rose but this bottle was AMAZING.  My only regret of the whole trip is not getting more.
  • Leaning Church - a cute little winery and church in a cute little town in the hills.  They had a great selection but their Chardonnay was the best we tried all day and dare I say, one of the best I have ever had.

Day three we headed to Cradle Mountain - one of Tassie's big draws.  There is a food trail on the way up but we were unimpressed with the cheese and chocolate tastings.

There is limited accommodation and food options but the Peppers Resort was alright (expensive - but you are in the middle of no where).  They put on good breakfasts, a decent dinner, and spacious cabins with a porch perfect for nature and wildlife watching, a fireplace and sofa, and a whirlpool tub - and lots of wildlife everywhere.  There were wombats and wallabies everyday on our way to the lodge for breakfast and dinner.  And even a few wallabies hopped onto our porch one evening (a mum holding her bub in her pouch no less! A first for me and Riley).

Other than enjoying our new wine collection in front of our fire and all of the wildlife viewing, we did do some hiking.  The best day hike is Ronny Creek to Dove Lake via Crater Lake.  The weather had been rainy the day before (to be expected here) and was still foggy on our hiking day so the views were under cover but the greenery was still beautiful. We also checked out the Tasmanian devil park just for something else to do and Riley loved it.

I highly recommend it and I am sure we will be back one day - hopefully with a little more time.
