Christmas in Chamonix
I know I should go home for Christmas to see the family. I usually do every year. But as an expat you also want to experience the holidays where you are too. So we decided to be selfish this year and go skiing for 2 weeks in the Alps. Snow. Chalets. Apres Ski. Fondue. Perfect.
We went in with a group of expats and rented a chalet for the week of Christmas in Chamonix, France. Staying in a chalet is perfect because it allows you to have cozy quiet nights in...homemade fondue for Christmas eve, Christmas brunch, raclette for Christmas dinner, and chocolate fondue for dessert (plus plenty of red wine or your drink of choice). Of course, there are some good places for a drink in town too. Our favourite was the local Canadian microbrewery, MBC, which is quite popular.
Chamonix is a few hour drive from Zurich and affords beautiful views of Mont Blanc. But it is not exactly an ideal ski town. Just 4 small ski areas which are not connected and not ski in and ski out...not to mention the lack of mountain huts for hot chocolate or lunch and après ski locations. However, the Chamonix ski pass also allows access to the much bigger and better ski resort of Courmayer in Italy on the other side of Mont Blanc. It has great runs and mountain huts, plus we lucked out with some great snow. A week skiing is also the perfect opportunity to take some private ski lessons (check out Tinderbox for great private lessons and ski touring guides).
A week of skiing and snow fun and building memories that I will never forget.
